The work analyses the socio economic condition of peasants, an impoverished and subordinate class known as zèga, and lords in the Northern part of Ethiopia. It introduces the institution of zègenät into the historical discourse on Ethiopia and provides an insight into its implication for class and the land tenure system in rural Gojjam. The study contends that the property system was not an impediment to the economic growth of the country.
